ABU DHABI // The ride to work rekindled Egyptian Alaa El Deen Sadeq’s love for cycling after a five-year break.
Mr Sadeq, 55, arrived at Khalifa Park at 6.30am to set off on his #cycletoworkuae trip, which lasted three-and-a-half hours, on a borrowed bike.
The head of the translation department at Jernas Solutions, an IT company in Abu Dhabi, he first rode a bike at the age of nine and on Tuesday said any nerves he had about riding on the capital’s roads soon vanished.
“After riding the bike I feel more active and energetic, and I am going to buy a cycle tonight,” Mr Sadeq said.
“When I went out of the park to buy some snacks from a grocery and had a real experience of the road, I was worried by the heavy traffic.
“I felt unsafe without a proper cycle track. It’s very dangerous to ride on road. But I found motorists slowed or stopped when they saw me crossing the road.”
Drivers and riders needed to be more aware of each other on the roads, he said.
Mr Sadeq bought a bicycle in Abu Dhabi five years ago and loved using it every evening, but he quit because there were few proper cycling tracks.
He said residents could incorporate shorter rides into their daily routine, which could lead to greater distances.
“Cycles could be best used five times a day when people go to prayer to mosques, and for groceries and to meet friends and relatives who live in the neighbourhood,” Mr Sadeq said. “There should be cycle stands around the mosques, too.”
He said school competitions should be organised, from which students, parents and teachers could benefit, and suggested prizes for winning pupils and consolation awards for others.
Mr Sadeq met and congratulated Mohammed Al Otaiba, Editor-In-Chief of The National, who led by example by riding his bicycle to the park and encouraged people to work for an energetic and healthy life.
“The National has inspired me to start cycling again and it should continue this drive,” Mr Sadeq said.

What is Reform?
Reform is a right-wing, populist party led by Nigel Farage, a former MEP who won a seat in the House of Commons last year at his eighth attempt and a prominent figure in the campaign for the UK to leave the European Union.
It was founded in 2018 and originally called the Brexit Party.
Many of its members previously belonged to UKIP or the mainstream Conservatives.
After Brexit took place, the party focused on the reformation of British democracy.
Former Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson became its first MP after defecting in March 2024.
The party gained support from Elon Musk, and had hoped the tech billionaire would make a £100m donation. However, Mr Musk changed his mind and called for Mr Farage to step down as leader in a row involving the US tycoon's support for far-right figurehead Tommy Robinson who is in prison for contempt of court.
How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.

How to join and use Abu Dhabi’s public libraries
• There are six libraries in Abu Dhabi emirate run by the Department of Culture and Tourism, including one in Al Ain and Al Dhafra.
• Libraries are free to visit and visitors can consult books, use online resources and study there. Most are open from 8am to 8pm on weekdays, closed on Fridays and have variable hours on Saturdays, except for Qasr Al Watan which is open from 10am to 8pm every day.
• In order to borrow books, visitors must join the service by providing a passport photograph, Emirates ID and a refundable deposit of Dh400. Members can borrow five books for three weeks, all of which are renewable up to two times online.
• If users do not wish to pay the fee, they can still use the library’s electronic resources for free by simply registering on the website. Once registered, a username and password is provided, allowing remote access.
