Julien's Auctions said on Saturday that bidders worldwide sought items from Madonna's professional and personal life during the two-day Icons & Idols: Rock 'n' Roll Auction in Beverly Hills that started on Friday. The gown and stole from her Material Girl video sold for US$73,125 (Dh268,600), while the wedding dress she wore when she married Sean Penn in 1985 took in $81,250. Madonna's jacket from Desperately Seeking Susan sold for a record $252,000 and one earring worn in the film went for $34,375. Other highlights included the gown from the film Evita – which sold for $15,000 – and her A League of Their Own baseball uniform – which sold for $31,250. – AP
Big Hero 6 beats Interstellar
The animated comedy Big Hero 6 proved to have superpowers in the weekend battle for the box office, fighting off the sci-fi epic Interstellar to claim the top spot. Big Hero 6, which features a 14-year-old genius and an inflatable robot called Baymax, opened with a weekend haul of $56.2 million (Dh206.4m), according to box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations. The film, which closed the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, beat out Christopher Nolan's space odyssey Interstellar, where astronauts travel through a wormhole in search of a new habitable planet. The heavily hyped film came in second with $50m. In third place was the David Fincher thriller Gone Girl, starring Ben Affleck. The film, which has earned more than $145m after six weeks in cinemas, pulled in another $6.1m at the North American box office at the weekend. – AP
Jacqueline Fernandez to make Hollywood debut
The Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez has bagged a role in the director James Simpson's psychological thriller Definition of Fear. Fernandez, whose last Hindi film Kick did well at the Indian box office, shared a scene from the film on Twitter. "Sneak peak from #definitionoffear can you guess my role in the movie?? Winner gets a shout out!!" she tweeted. The film also stars Katherine Barrell, Mercedes Papalia and Blythe Hubbard. – The National staff
