Abu Dhabi's huge Midfield Terminal project is continuing to take shape, as seen in a new video released by Abu Dhabi Airport.

The bird's-eye view of the huge structure shows its smooth contours and the vast scale of the project which is due to be completed in 2019.

The airport will be able to accommodate up to 30 million passengers a year when the terminal opens its doors.

“Abu Dhabi International Airport will be the jewel in the crown of the infrastructure projects in the emirate, and it will constitute a paradigm shift in international standards to cope with the development the UAE capital Abu Dhabi is currently witnessing,” Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed, deputy chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, said in March.

The Midfield Terminal will house 65 aircraft gates and cover an area of about 742,000 square metres, which will include 3,500 sq metres of duty free shopping. It is being built by a partnership between Arabtec, the Consolidated Contractors Company of Greece and Turkey’s airports specialist, TAV Group.

Built over six levels, the building will include a hotel, restaurants and an art gallery.

"At the Midfield Terminal, the typical, often oppressive airport retail experience is replaced with a more enjoyable, city-like public square complete with gardens, museums and spas, as well as a hotel," Mustafa Chehabeddine, the design principal at KPF who is overseeing the new terminal, recently told The National. "The experience is designed to reduce the level of stress for passengers and replace it with a strong sense of place and excitement."
