Ride hailing app Careem expanded the role of its management team to boost growth across the Middle East and North Africa region, the company said on Thursday.
The role of Ibrahim Manna, managing director of Careem’s developing markets in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Turkey now includes Saudi Arabia, according to the company.
Wael Abou El Ella will lead North African territories including Egypt and Morocco, with market launches planned, whereas Bassel Al Nahlaoui, managing director for the Gulf region will also lead operations in Pakistan. Abdulla Elyas, a co-founder of Careem, becomes the chairman of Saudi Arabia operations.
“Expert and seasoned managing directors will lead expanded geographies and drive growth across new products and services in their respective markets,” the statement said.
The company was recently bought by rival Uber for $3.1 billion (Dh11.39bn) and is going through regulatory approvals in all of the territories where it operates to finalise the deal.
“As we grow and do new things at Careem, it is important for us to keep evolving our leadership structures to best align with opportunities and realities,” Mudassir Sheikha, chief executive and co-founder of Careem said in an email to colleagues.
“This evolution had to kick into high gear to realise our new Vision 2022 and the aspiration to become the region’s everyday Super App.”
“Many of our markets and functions have expanded in scope and size since we last organised them, and it is only prudent that we do a strategic review to set them up for their next phase of crazy growth”.
Over the next two quarters, the business will begin to provide a broader range of services to customers such as financial services and expand the on-demand delivery service.
Last week, the company launched a new ride hailing app, Hala, under a joint venture with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority. More than half of the RTA’s taxi fleet will be available to book through the app by mid-September and all 10,000 taxis will be on the app by the start of next year.

Tournament rules
The matches are of 25 over-a-side with an 8-over power play in which only two fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle. Teams play in a single round robin league followed by the semi-finals and final. The league toppers will feature in the semi-final eliminator.
How the bonus system works
The two riders are among several riders in the UAE to receive the top payment of £10,000 under the Thank You Fund of £16 million (Dh80m), which was announced in conjunction with Deliveroo's £8 billion (Dh40bn) stock market listing earlier this year.
The £10,000 (Dh50,000) payment is made to those riders who have completed the highest number of orders in each market.
There are also riders who will receive payments of £1,000 (Dh5,000) and £500 (Dh2,500).
All riders who have worked with Deliveroo for at least one year and completed 2,000 orders will receive £200 (Dh1,000), the company said when it announced the scheme.

What is Financial Fair Play?
Introduced in 2011 by Uefa, European football’s governing body, it demands that clubs live within their means. Chiefly, spend within their income and not make substantial losses.
What the rules dictate?
The second phase of its implementation limits losses to €30 million (Dh136m) over three seasons. Extra expenditure is permitted for investment in sustainable areas (youth academies, stadium development, etc). Money provided by owners is not viewed as income. Revenue from “related parties” to those owners is assessed by Uefa's “financial control body” to be sure it is a fair value, or in line with market prices.
What are the penalties?
There are a number of punishments, including fines, a loss of prize money or having to reduce squad size for European competition – as happened to PSG in 2014. There is even the threat of a competition ban, which could in theory lead to PSG’s suspension from the Uefa Champions League.
