SHARJAH // Thirteen multi-storey car parks are being built across Sharjah, while major roads in the emirate are undergoing upgrades.
Salah bin Butti, director of the Sharjah Planning and Survey Department, told the Sharjah Consultative Council yesterday that progress was being made in solving the city’s parking problem.
“An estimated 650,000 vehicles travel to or pass through Sharjah on a daily basis, with an additional 14,000 heavy lorries adding load on the network of roads in the emirate,” he said.
The director said four main roads connecting Sharjah city with neighbouring emirates were being upgraded.
“Al Etihad, Al Orouba, Wasit and Corniche street [are being upgraded] to ease the burden on motorists,” he said.
“Three other roads are being upgraded to give motorists easy access to Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road.”
He said the car parks would provide an additional 6,000 parking spaces to the 12,000 already provided through partnerships with the private sector.
Intercity roads connecting Sharjah city with the east coast are also being upgraded.
The director said that 17 pedestrian bridges had also been approved, of which two have already been completed on Mohammed bin Zayed Road, while three are being built on Al Etihad, King Faisal and King Abdul Aziz roads in Sharjah city.
