DUBAI // Two men who shot the son of a hardware shop owner during a botched robbery have had their prison sentences increased from three to 15 years by the Appeal's Court.
AA, 28, and QH, 25, both from Iran, shot Hussain Fakhruddin in the chest when he tried to resist the robbery, believing the gun to be fake.
On June 19 the pair had followed a salesman back to the store after watching him cash a cheque for Dh146,750. They entered the store, Al Rizq Al Halal Trading Company in Deira, and pretended to be looking for tools before one of them drew the weapon and threatened Mr Fakhruddin.
Police used the shop's security camera footage to identify the men and arrested one of them two days later at his flat in Sharjah. He was found hiding on top of an air-conditioning unit.
He tried to escape and a shoot-out ensued in which police shot him in the leg. The other man was arrested later the same day.
At their original trial both denied a charge of attempted murder but were found guilty. One of them, AA, was also found guilty of possessing an illegal firearm.
Both men will be deported after serving their sentences.

Countdown to Zero exhibition will show how disease can be beaten
Countdown to Zero: Defeating Disease, an international multimedia exhibition created by the American Museum of National History in collaboration with The Carter Center, will open in Abu Dhabi a month before Reaching the Last Mile.
Opening on October 15 and running until November 15, the free exhibition opens at The Galleria mall on Al Maryah Island, and has already been seen at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
